Creating and Managing Service Types

Service types are used to capture the specific mutually agreed-upon variety of work that your firm performs for a client. Practifi is packaged with standard service types included, and admins can create new service types to capture the styles of service provided by your firm. This article outlines the creation and modification of existing service types. For more information on services, please consult our Understanding Services & Deals article.

Creating new service types

  1. Click the App Launcher in the left-hand corner and use Quick Find to search for “Categories.”
  2. Select Categories under the Items section in the drop-down options.
  3. On the Categories list page, select the New button on the right-hand side.
  4. In the Category Name field, enter the name of the service type. The name entered here will display on the service record and will display in the Service Type picklist.
  5. Enter an abbreviated version of the service type name in the Short Name field if the service type name is lengthy. This field is not required for service type creation.
  6. Set the Related To picklist to the value of “Service Type.”
  7. Enable the Active checkbox if not already enabled.
  8. Enter a value beginning with SERV and an abbreviation of your service type in the Code. For example, a service type of Investment Management could have the code SERVINVESTMGMT. The value is used in business rules and must be unique from other service types.
  9. Group and Group Code are non-required fields used to group service types. These can remain blank upon initial creation.
  10. Set the Order field to a whole number to determine the placement of this service type in the Service Type picklist.
  11. Select the Save button to finalize the creation of the new service type. To create multiple service types, select Save and New to begin the creation process again.

Managing service types

Editing an existing service type

  1. Click the App Launcher in the left-hand corner and use Quick Find to search for “Categories.”
  2. Select Categories under the Items section in the drop-down options.
  3. On the Categories list page, locate the service type name you would like to modify and select the carrot icon on the right-hand side.
    • The table search is used to locate a service type by name. If having difficulty locating a service type, ensure the Categories table view is set to “All Service Types” instead of “Recently Viewed.”
  4. Select Edit from the drop-down options.
  5. Edit the values within the pop-up and then select Save to finalize the change. 

Deactivating service types

  1. Click the App Launcher in the left-hand corner and use Quick Find to search for “Categories.”
  2. Select Categories under the Items section in the drop-down options.
  3. On the Categories list page, locate the service type name you would like to modify and select the carrot icon on the right-hand side.
    • The table search is used to locate a service type by name. If having difficulty locating a service type, ensure the Categories table view is set to “All Service Types” instead of “Recently Viewed.”
  4. Select Edit from the drop-down options.
  5. Deselect the Active checkbox within the pop-up.
  6. Select Save to finalize this change and deactivate this option. Deactivated service types will no longer display as an option within the Service Type picklist but may remain displayed on records with this service type already selected.
